3rd Annual MAKE YOUR MARK GOLF OUTING: SEPTEMBER 27, 2008

Green Garden Country Club in Frankfort, IL was the site of the Third Annual Make Your Mark Golf Outing on September 27th, 2008. The beautiful fall Saturday saw 160 golfers, countless volunteers, and the accommodating staff at Green Garden all come together for our most successful outing yet. Dinner followed the 4-man scramble, as well as many door prizes and raffles, including Bears tickets and a full set of golf clubs. Thanks goes out to former White Sox stand-out Carlos May who was kind enough to join us on our “Beat the Pro” hole. Special thanks is also in order for the fine staff at Green Garden and all of our sponsors who helped under-write our event, you have all made your mark!

3rd Annual SHOREWOOD SCOOT 5K Walk/Run: SEPTEMBER 6, 2008

The Third Annual Shorewood Scoot, organized by Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, was held Saturday, September 6th. This year’s Scoot once again saw over 500 registrants and had 447 timed finishers. Wes Benson of Burr Ridge, IL was the overall winner, covering the 5K in a time of 17:48.2. Thanks to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center and all of the sponsors they were able to draw for another successful Scoot. Special thanks to Matt Klebenow, Michelle Peterson, and Rich Matula, the organizers of the Shorewood Scoot, for the foresight to plan this event three years ago and the commitment to keep it going strong.

3rd Annual MARK STAEHELY FIREFIGHTER SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: AUGUST 16, 2008

On Saturday, August 16, 2008, the Third Annual Mark Staehely Firefighter Softball Tournament was held at the Four Seasons Park in Shorewood. After rain delayed the tournament on July 19th, eight of the original twelve teams were able to make it out on a great August day. The Young Guns, a team made up of mostly Shorewood Police officers, manages by Jeff Hanley were this year’s champions.

Softball tournament proceeds go to funding the Mark Staehely Memorial Scholarship Fund, a $2000.00 scholarship that is awarded to a cadet/student pursuing a fire science degree at a two or four year institution.

The 2009 recipient is Matt Muehlbauer. Matt is a cadet in the Homer district and is currently wrapping up paramedic classes this semester. Matt’s treatise exemplified many of the characteristics that Make Your Mark looks for in a candidate, and we are proud to have him represent our foundation.

The 2008 recipient was Mike Pemble. Mike is a fire science student at Joliet Junior College, and is a cadet at the Braidwood Fire Department. Mike's essay and accompanying reference letter from a fellow firefighter more than exhibited all of the attributes that the foundation looks for in its scholarship recipient. Congratulations, Mike!

2nd Annual MARK STAEHELY FIREFIGHTER SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: JULY 21, 2007

For the second year in a row family, friends and firefighters gathered at Shorewood's Four Seasons Park for a day of family fun. All monies raised supported the Mark Staehely Memorial Firefighter Scholarship Fund.

Mark was a cadet with the Troy Fire Department and dreamed of becoming a fireman someday. When Mark lost his battle with neuroblastoma, it seemed only natural that this event take place in his honor and that all monies raised would be used to help others to achieve their dream of becoming a firefighter.

In its first year, the event was a great success. Along with ten teams competing for the championship on the softball fields, there was a bean bag tournament with over 40 (2-man) teams participating, that saw the winners head home with tickets to a White Sox game. Concessions, a beer garden and a kid's tent rounded out a day of fun for every member of the family.

The 2nd Annual tournament included a double elimination 16 inch tournament, two bean bag tournaments (one for those 16 years and older and one for those 10 - 15 years old), face painting, and games with prizes for the kids.
